FAQs

  • What Is Under One Sky?

Under One Sky is a UK-based, volunteer-powered charity supporting people affected by homelessness.

We focus on building human connection as the foundation for change - reducing isolation, rebuilding trust, and supporting people as they move from crisis towards stability and independence. Our work is rooted in the understanding that homelessness is often driven by complex trauma, and that consistent relationships are key to long-term change.

Through our programmes - from street outreach to longer-term support - we walk alongside people at every stage of their journey, from surviving to thriving.

We also work to mobilise communities and shift public understanding of homelessness, creating a more compassionate and collective response to one of society’s most urgent challenges.

  • What Do You Do?

Our main activity is outreach in the form of Skywalks, where our teams walk the streets to connect with our homeless friends and provide life essentials (food, water, hot drinks, clothing…) alongside practical help and befriending.

Building on these relationships, our Lighthouse programme offers more structured, longer-term support for those ready to take the next step - helping people move towards stability, purpose, and independence. Through all our work, we aim to expand public understanding of the root causes and human reality of homelessness.

  • Why Are You Doing This?

Our mission is to work with others to end homelessness. For us this means supporting those affected to move from surviving to thriving in life, not only putting a roof over somebody’s head.

There are close to 300,000 people affected by homelessness in England alone. The majority are families living in temporary accommodation. In London 1 in every 53 people are homeless. Our focus is on supporting those who face the toughest form of homelessness; street homelessness.

  • Who is Involved?

Under One Sky is powered by a community of volunteers, supported by a small staff team, a volunteer steering group, and governed by a board of trustees, all working together to deliver and grow our impact.

  • What Is Your History?

Under One Sky began as a one-off Christmas outreach organised by founder Mikkel Juel Iversen in 2012. From 2012–2019, it ran as a small “friends and family” initiative delivering a handful of winter outreach events each year.

As the volunteer base and support grew, Under One Sky formally incorporated in 2018, became a Community Interest Company in 2021, and transitioned to a registered charity (CIO) in 2022.

The pandemic marked a turning point. During lockdown, our teams operated daily across Central London, supporting up to 600 people each day - transforming Under One Sky from a winter project into a year-round organisation.

  • Are You Making A Difference?

Since 2020, Under One Sky has made over 200,000 meaningful street connections with people affected by homelessness, primarily in London. Each week, we connect with around 600 homeless friends through our outreach.

We have also built the foundations for long-term impact: a volunteer base of 2,500+ and a network of over 100 corporate partners.

Every interaction centres on human connection, alongside essential items such as food, clothing, toiletries, and mobile phones. Our consistent presence helps rebuild trust, reduce isolation, and identify how we can support each individual.

Through these relationships, we have supported many people to move off the streets - into housing, employment, or back to family and support networks - as well as providing life-changing items that support health and dignity.

  • What Is A Skywalk?

We call our street outreach events Skywalks. At each event a designated team led by a team leader covers a specific geographical area by foot and serves anywhere from 20 to 100+ homeless friends.

  • Are You A Charity?

Yes, Under One Sky is a registered charity (charity number: 1198901), registered with the Charity Commission in May 2022.

We are also registered in Scotland with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (charity number SC054510) from August 2025.

  • Do You Work With Other Charities?

We work with other charities, social enterprises, companies and institutions to have the biggest possible impact. Each organisation has one or more pieces of the solution and only by collaborating can we make each piece count fully.
A key priority for Under One Sky is to build community and engage that community in the cause. Social issues are shared issues in society and we need a wide range of capabilities to develop effective solutions. Importantly we need individuals and organisations to invest themselves emotionally in the issue.

  • Where does your funding come from?

Under One Sky is funded through a combination of individual giving, corporate partnerships, and grants from trusts and foundations.

We have historically been supported by private and corporate donations, and are now growing our funding from trusts and foundations to support the expansion of our programmes and long-term impact.

We aim to maintain a strong base of flexible, unrestricted funding while building a more diverse and sustainable funding model for the future.

  • How Do You Spend Donations?

The majority of our funding goes directly towards delivering support to people affected by homelessness, including outreach and essential items such as food, clothing, toiletries, and mobile phones.

We also provide one-off, life-changing support such as glasses, travel to reconnect with family, and emergency accommodation where needed.

Alongside this, we invest in the people, systems, and infrastructure required to deliver our programmes safely and consistently.

We are committed to using donations responsibly and transparently, ensuring they have the greatest possible impact for those we support.

  • What are your plans for the future?

To realise our mission to end homelessness, our plans are centred around three priority areas:

    1. Change lives - We are expanding our programmes to support people from crisis to independence, including Skywalks (outreach), Lighthouse (transformation), and Clear Horizon (long-term reintegration).

    2. Grow and engage communities - We will continue to mobilise local and global communities to become actively involved in the solution, through volunteering, partnerships, and collective action.

    3. Shift public understanding - We aim to change how society relates to homelessness by building empathy, challenging stigma, and increasing awareness of its root causes.
